PA State Senator James Malone came to our club for a mini town hall.

Our guest speaker was State Senator James Malone. He began by thanking the club for our clean-up and conservation efforts, then took questions from the group.  Rotarians participated in person as well as via Teams meeting.  Thanks to Senator Malone and staff for supporting Rotary!

Marijuana legalization:
  • Ongoing debate: Senator Malone favors a cautious, science-based, and well-regulated approach.
  • Concerns raised about public health, youth exposure, workforce impacts (e.g., CDL drivers), and long-term costs vs. revenue.
Hemp regulation:
  • Support for hemp farming and products, with emphasis on testing, safety, and clear THC limits.

Bipartisan cooperation:
  • Examples shared, including legislation on AI deepfake/child protection reporting and Sunday hunting.

State budget challenges:
  • Chronic delays in passing budgets.
  • Negative impacts on community service organizations.
  • Concerns about closed-door negotiations, inaccurate projections, and lack of transparency.
  • Encouragement for citizens to contact legislators to advocate for cooperation and timely budgeting.
State finances:
  • Pennsylvania has manageable debt and a healthy reserve, though budgeting practices remain a concern.
Thanks to Senator Malone for joining us for an informative meeting.
